The Peloponnese is the four-fingered peninsula that hangs off the bottom of mainland Greece, and it is the part of the country that people who know Greece keep going back to. It has mountains, a coastline in every direction, more archaeology than anywhere else in Europe, and almost none of the island crowding that shapes a Greek summer.
The Mani is the middle finger and the strangest of them. Limestone, tower houses, and a history of feuding that the architecture still records. Outer Mani, around Kardamyli, Kalamitsi and Stoupa, is the green half: Taygetos comes almost to the sea and there is water, olive and shade. Deep Mani, south of Areopoli, is bare rock, and it is the most extraordinary landscape in southern Greece.
Elsewhere on the peninsula: Nafplio is the handsome former capital, Monemvasia is a fortified town on a rock, Olympia and Mycenae are what they sound like, and the interior is mountain villages that see very few visitors. Kalamata is the airport, and it is under an hour from the Mani coast.
The trade is the driving. Distances look small and the roads are slow, coastal and often single-track in the south. Two bases beat six, and a week is the sensible minimum.

Getting There
Kalamata (KLX) is the airport for the western Peloponnese and the Mani, with seasonal direct flights from northern Europe and a drive of about an hour to Kardamyli. Athens is roughly four hours by road and eats a day at each end, which is only worth it if you are combining the Peloponnese with something else. There is no useful rail network for the places in this guide, and you will need a car.
Insider Tip
Two bases, seven nights minimum. The peninsula is about 75km from Kalamata to Cape Tainaron and the roads take roughly twice as long as the map suggests.

Where is the Peloponnese?
It is the large peninsula forming the southern part of mainland Greece, connected to the rest of the country at the Isthmus of Corinth and separated from it by the Corinth Canal. Athens is about four hours away by road; Kalamata, in the southwest, has its own airport.
Is the Peloponnese better than the Greek islands?
It is different rather than better, and the difference is real. You get mountains, archaeology and a road network instead of ferries, and you can change your mind about where to be without consulting a timetable. What you give up is the island feeling and the short hop between beaches.
How long do you need in the Peloponnese?
Seven nights as a floor, and the peninsula rewards ten. The distances look modest and the roads are slow, so a week spent in two bases sees far more than a week spent moving.
When is the best time to visit the Peloponnese?
April and May for the landscape, when the hills are green and the wildflowers are out but the sea is still cold. Late June or September if you want to swim, and September water is warmer than June water. July and August are hot and busy by local standards, which is not busy by island standards.
