Agios Nikolaos, Peloponnese: the working harbour below Stoupa

First, the disambiguation, because it catches people out. This is not the Agios Nikolaos on Crete. Greece has a great many places named after Saint Nicholas, who is the patron saint of sailors, and every fishing coast has one. This one is in Messenia, on the Outer Mani coast, about 10 minutes south of Stoupa.
What it is
A working fishing harbour with boats actually in it, a row of tavernas along the quay, and a village behind that has not been rearranged for visitors.
Come here for lunch. The harbour faces west, so the light in the afternoon is good and the evening is better.

It is the southern end of the green half of the Mani. Below it the coast road climbs and the landscape starts turning into the bare limestone of the deep south.
Eating
Meze Mani describes itself as "a charming and cosy tavern in Agios Nikolaos, Mani, that specializes in serving traditional small plates with Greek finger food". It was checked against its own site on 24 August 2026.
Most of the harbour's tavernas publish nothing at all, which is normal here: across the Mani we found 206 mapped eating places and 17 websites between them. Ring at midday, or walk down and look.
**Ask for the fish that is fresko.** This is a working harbour and the answer is sometimes genuinely yes, which is not true everywhere on this coast.
Should you stay here?
Probably not, and that is not a criticism. There are fewer places to stay than in Stoupa or Kardamyli, less to do in the evening, and no beach of consequence in the village itself.
What it is very good at is being the third point of a triangle. Sleep in Kardamyli, take the sand at Stoupa, and eat at Agios Nikolaos. All three are inside 25 minutes of each other.
If you want the most ordinary-feeling of the three, and some people specifically do, then stay here.

The hill villages behind the coast road, which have no itinerary and should not have one. Some of the best hours in the Mani come from stopping in one that is on nobody's list.
