The Algarve and Comporta get sold together and they have almost nothing in common. Both face the Atlantic, not the Mediterranean, which matters more than it sounds: the water is colder, the light is harder, and the beaches are enormous rather than intimate.\n\nThe Algarve splits at Faro. West of it, the Barlavento coast gives you cliffs, coves and the golf belt around Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo. East, the Sotavento coast flattens into the Ria Formosa lagoon and sandbar islands, and is quieter for it. The villa stock is mature, which cuts both ways: plenty of choice, and a lot of properties built in the 1990s that photograph better than they live.\n\nComporta is not the Algarve. It sits about an hour south of Lisbon on the Alentejo coast, and it is low, flat and pine-covered, with rice paddies running down to the dunes. It has become expensive quickly and the building is visible. Go now if you are going.

Getting There
Faro (FAO) serves the whole Algarve and is well connected to the UK. Comporta is reached from Lisbon (LIS), around an hour by car including the bridge, and is not sensibly done from Faro. Do not plan to combine the two without a car and a spare day.
Insider Tip
The Sotavento side east of Faro is consistently quieter than the Barlavento side west of it, for the same money. If you want the lagoon and the sandbars rather than the cliffs and the golf, book east and ignore the guidebooks.

Is the Algarve warm enough to swim in October?
Air temperatures hold up well into October, but this is the Atlantic, not the Mediterranean, and the sea is noticeably colder than Spain or Italy at the same latitude. Most villas at this level have heated pools. Ask before you book, because an unheated pool in October is decorative.
Can we do the Algarve and Comporta in one trip?
You can, but it is roughly a three-hour drive and they are different holidays. Comporta pairs far better with Lisbon than with Faro. If you have ten nights and want both, base in Comporta first, then drive south.
