Bali runs on a different economics from the rest of this list, and it changes the shape of a holiday rather than just the bill. Households here are staffed in a way that is normal locally and unfamiliar to most visitors, and using that well rather than awkwardly is most of the skill.
Geographically it is several islands in one. The south around Seminyak and Canggu is dense, developed and busy. Ubud inland is rice terrace, river gorge and the centre of the island's craft and ceremonial life. The east and north are quieter and considerably less set up for visitors.
The thing most first visits get wrong is treating the ceremonies as scenery. They are not staged, they are continuous, and the calendar they run on is the island's own.

Getting There
Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) receives direct flights from Singapore (2.5 hours), Hong Kong, Sydney, and many Asian capitals. From London, one-stop connections via Singapore, Dubai, or Doha take 15-17 hours total. Transfers to Seminyak take 30-45 minutes, Ubud 1.5 hours, and Uluwatu 45 minutes. Hiring a driver for the transfer is normal and usually cheaper than it sounds.
