Villa Uluwatu Cliff sits on the limestone cliffs of the Bukit Peninsula, where Bali's southern tip drops 70 metres into the Indian Ocean. The 20-metre infinity pool extends beyond the cliff edge on a reinforced concrete cantilever, creating the sensation of swimming into open ocean. Below the villa, a funicular descends to a semi-private beach popular with surfers. The architecture combines raw concrete and tropical hardwood, with every bedroom oriented to catch the morning offshore wind. The Bukit Peninsula is Bali's most dramatic coastline. Limestone cliffs rise sheer from the Indian Ocean, their faces carved by centuries of wave action into a series of hidden caves and narrow beaches accessible only by steep staircases or, in the case of Villa Uluwatu Cliff, a private funicular. The area has been transformed over the past decade from a surfing backwater into one of Southeast Asia's most sought-after luxury villa locations, and the clifftop properties here compete with anywhere in the world for dramatic positioning. The cantilevered pool is the villa's defining feature. The 20-metre length extends six metres beyond the cliff edge, supported by a reinforced concrete structure engineered to withstand the salt air and seismic conditions of the Indonesian archipelago. Swimming in the pool, particularly at the far end where the cliff drops away beneath the glass panel, creates the sensation of floating above the ocean. The effect at sunset, when the water catches the amber light and the ocean turns gold below, is genuinely extraordinary. Five bedrooms are arranged in a linear layout along the cliff edge, each oriented to catch the morning offshore wind that flows from the land toward the sea before dawn. This breeze, prized by surfers for the clean wave faces it creates, also provides natural ventilation that reduces the need for air conditioning. The master suite occupies the villa's eastern end, with a private terrace, an outdoor bathtub, and a panoramic view along the cliff line. All bedrooms have ensuite bathrooms with locally quarried volcanic stone surfaces. The funicular descends 70 metres from the villa's lower terrace to a semi-private beach shared with one adjacent property. The beach is a crescent of white sand backed by the limestone cliff, popular with surfers who ride the reef break just offshore. Non-surfers will find calm swimming at high tide and excellent snorkelling around the rocks at either end. The funicular operates electrically and takes approximately two minutes each way. The architecture throughout is a dialogue between raw concrete and tropical hardwood. Exposed concrete walls and polished concrete floors provide the structural backbone, while ironwood screens, teak furniture, and bamboo ceiling details add warmth and texture. A live-in staff of seven includes a Balinese chef who prepares fresh seafood from the Jimbaran fish market (20 minutes' drive), grilled over coconut husk at the outdoor kitchen. The Uluwatu Temple, Bali's most spectacular clifftop shrine, is a 10-minute drive south.
