Villa Sayan perches on the Sayan Ridge, the dramatic river valley that inspired Colin McPhee's A House in Bali and later became home to the Four Seasons Sayan. Designed by the same architect who conceived that hotel, this estate cascades down the valley wall through a series of open-air pavilions connected by stone pathways. The main living pavilion has no walls - only a roof and columns overlooking the Ayung River gorge 60 metres below. A staff of nine includes a Balinese chef, two gardeners, and a dedicated driver. The Sayan Ridge is Bali's most dramatic residential address. The Ayung River has carved a deep gorge through the volcanic rock, creating valley walls so steep and densely forested that the effect is almost primordial. Colin McPhee, the Canadian composer who wrote A House in Bali in 1947, chose this spot for its combination of beauty and isolation. The Four Seasons Sayan, built in the 1990s, brought international attention to the ridge. Villa Sayan, designed by the same architect, sits approximately 500 metres from the hotel on a portion of the ridge that is, if anything, even more dramatic. The cascading design follows the valley wall downward through four tiers. The upper tier contains the entrance, the car court, and the main living pavilion. The second tier holds three bedroom pavilions and the dining pavilion. The third tier houses the infinity pool and two more bedroom pavilions. The lowest tier, close to the river itself, contains a yoga platform and a meditation pavilion. Stone pathways and staircases connect all levels, winding through gardens of tropical ferns, heliconias, and orchids maintained by the two full-time gardeners. The main living pavilion is the architectural centrepiece. It has no walls - only a soaring thatched roof supported by ironwood columns - and its floor extends to the very edge of the gorge. Sitting here, you are surrounded by jungle on three sides and open air on the fourth, with the Ayung River audible 60 metres below. In the early morning, mist rises from the gorge and the pavilion appears to float above a cloud forest. Six bedrooms are distributed across the second and third tiers, each in its own pavilion with open-air bathroom, private terrace, and garden view. The master pavilion has a king bed positioned to face the river gorge, a sunken bathtub carved from a single piece of volcanic stone, and an outdoor shower behind a bamboo screen. All pavilions have ceiling fans and air conditioning, though many guests find the natural breeze sufficient. The staff of nine provides a level of service that is standard in Bali's luxury market but astonishing by Western expectations. The Balinese chef prepares three meals daily, with menus that draw on both Indonesian and international cuisines. The driver is available from 7am to 10pm for trips to Ubud (15 minutes), the rice terraces of Tegallalang (25 minutes), or the beach towns of the south coast (90 minutes). The gardeners maintain the grounds and can arrange flower offerings, temple visits, and traditional Balinese cooking classes.
