Villa Tabanan sits on the black volcanic sand of Bali's Tabanan coast, the stretch of western shoreline between Tanah Lot temple and the Medewi surf break that remains almost entirely untouched by tourism. The five-bedroom estate occupies a beachfront compound where rice paddies meet the sea, creating a landscape of extraordinary beauty that most Bali visitors never see. The villa was designed by a Dutch-Indonesian architect who spent a decade documenting Bali's vanishing agrarian landscape before building a house that celebrates it. Low-slung pavilions in local stone and recycled teak sit within a working coconut grove, oriented to frame Mount Batukaru to the north and the Indian Ocean sunset to the west. The main pavilion is a dramatic open-sided structure with a thatched roof supported by ancient ironwood columns. The living area, kitchen, and dining table for twelve share this single generous space, with fabric screens that can be drawn for wind protection on rare blustery evenings. The chef cooks Balinese cuisine using ingredients from the property's organic garden and the morning market in Tabanan town. The pool is a 20-metre infinity edge design set into the beachfront lawn, with the black sand beach directly beyond. Bali's western beaches face dramatic Indian Ocean sunsets, and the villa's position means the sun drops directly into the sea. The beach is wild and empty - good for walking but not for swimming during the monsoon swell season (December to March). Five bedrooms are arranged in pairs across two guest pavilions, with the primary suite in its own standalone building. Each room has an outdoor bathroom with garden shower, ceiling fans, and mosquito nets draped over four-poster beds. Air conditioning is installed but rarely needed - the sea breeze at this elevation keeps rooms comfortable year-round. The property includes a manager, chef, three housekeepers, a gardener, and a driver. Tanah Lot temple is a twenty-minute drive for the sunset ceremony. Ubud is ninety minutes through the rice terraces of Jatiluwih, which are themselves a UNESCO World Heritage Site worth a full day's exploration.
