Flights to the Peloponnese: Kalamata or Athens

There are two realistic ways in, and choosing wrongly costs you a day at each end of the holiday.
Kalamata (KLX)
Kalamata sits in the southwest, at the head of the Messenian Gulf, and it is the practical airport for Messenia and the Mani.
Kalamata to Kardamyli is about an hour on the coast road through Kitries. To Stoupa, add 15 minutes. To Areopoli, allow 90 minutes to two hours. To Cape Tainaron, most of a morning.
The catch is scheduling. Direct services from northern Europe are seasonal, concentrated in the summer months, and thin outside them. Check your dates before you fix anything else, because the answer changes the whole shape of the trip.
Athens (ATH)
Athens is the year-round option, with far more connections and far more competition on price.
The cost is the drive: roughly four hours to the southwest, on good motorway for most of it and then not. That is a real four hours, and it eats a day at each end of a week.
Athens is the right answer if you are combining the Peloponnese with Athens itself, or if you are going to the Argolid, because Nafplio, Mycenae and Epidaurus are about two hours out and genuinely on the way.
Athens is the wrong answer for a seven-night Mani trip in season, unless Kalamata has nothing on your dates.
What about the train?
There is no useful rail network for the southern Peloponnese. The line that once ran south was closed and what remains does not serve any of the places in this guide. Do not plan around it.
The car
You need one, and you want a small one. Village streets in Areopoli and the Deep Mani settlements were laid out for mules and have not been widened since, and the southern roads narrow to single track with passing places and no barrier on the sea side.
Book it with the flight rather than on arrival. Kalamata is a small airport and the desks run out of the smaller categories.
