Eastern or southern Peloponnese: which half to choose

People arrive at this question because both halves look reachable on a map. They are, individually. Together they are a driving holiday.
The eastern Peloponnese
The Argolid, around Nafplio, holds the archaeology everyone has heard of. Mycenae, with the Lion Gate. Epidaurus, with the theatre whose acoustics are not exaggerated. Nafplio itself, which is a handsome former capital with a Venetian fortress and a real old town.
Further south, Monemvasia is a fortified town on a rock reached by a causeway, and it is one of the most striking places in Greece.
The advantage is Athens. The Argolid begins about two hours from the airport, which makes it the practical short break and the natural first-time choice for someone flying year-round.
The southern Peloponnese
The Mani is a limestone peninsula with tower houses on it and a history that explains them. Outer Mani around Kardamyli and Stoupa is green and coastal. Deep Mani, south of Areopoli, is bare rock, and it is the most extraordinary landscape in southern Greece.
Cape Tainaron at the end is the southernmost point of mainland Greece and was known in antiquity as an entrance to the underworld.
The advantage is Kalamata, which is an hour from the Mani coast in season.

Which to choose
Choose the east if you are flying to Athens, if you want the famous archaeology, if you are travelling outside the summer season, or if you want a town rather than a village.
Choose the south if you are flying to Kalamata, if you want swimming and walking, if you want somewhere that has not been arranged for visitors, or if the tower houses and the landscape are the draw.
Can you do both?
On ten nights, yes, with one long drive in the middle and a night at Monemvasia or Gytheio to break it. On seven, no. You will spend the difference in the car and see both halves badly.

Which part of the Peloponnese is best for a first visit?
The east if you are flying into Athens and want the famous sites; the south if you are flying into Kalamata and want landscape and swimming. Both are good first visits and they are not the same holiday.
How long does it take to drive from Nafplio to the Mani?
Most of a day once you allow for stops, and it is not a drive to do at the end of a travel day. If you are combining the two halves, break the journey at Monemvasia or Gytheio.
Is Monemvasia in the east or the south?
On the east coast of the Laconian finger, which puts it between the two in practice. It is a natural stop if you are moving from the Argolid towards the Mani.
