Stoupa beaches, and the ones worth driving to

Stoupa has the best sand on the Outer Mani coast, which is why it is busier than its neighbours. Here is what is in the village and what is worth a drive.
In Stoupa
Kalogria is the smaller bay and the one most people mean. Sand, calm water, a freshwater spring that keeps the sea noticeably cooler at one end, which is either a feature or a shock depending on the day.
Stoupa beach is longer, sandy and shallower, with the strip of tavernas behind it. Easier with small children.
Both are calm in normal conditions and both shelve gently.
Fifteen minutes north, at Kardamyli
Ritsa is pebble rather than sand, backed by the village, and central enough that you can swim, eat and walk home. Kardamili Beach Hotel puts itself "50m from the sea" and "only a 3-minute walk from the pebbled beach of Ritsa", which is the scale of the place. Elies sits at the far end of it and does lunch by the sea.
Salio is small, a few steps from the village square, and mentioned by Skardamoula's as being right by their rooms.
Ten minutes south, at Agios Nikolaos
Not really a beach, a working fishing harbour, and the best lunch on this stretch. Swim at Stoupa and eat here.
Worth the drive
Limeni, about 90 minutes south below Areopoli, is not a beach at all: a tiny stone harbour with water of an implausible colour. It is the best swim on the peninsula and it is five minutes off the main road, and most people drive past it.
Halikia and the Diros beach, at Pyrgos Dirou. The cave operator provides umbrellas and loungers free of charge on the beach in front of the cave, and describes Halikia nearby as "an unspoiled shoreline of distinctive natural beauty". This is what makes a queue for the caves survivable: swim afterwards rather than driving on.
Mavrovouni, near Gytheio on the east coast, is described by a hotel that sits on it as "the largest and most popular beach of Mani". It is a long sandy stretch and a different coast.
Two practical points
Sea shoes. This is a limestone coast and much of it enters the water as rock rather than sand. The village bays are fine; the coves are not.
The wind decides the coast. The west takes the weather and the east is sheltered. If the forecast turns, crossing takes about 30 minutes from Areopoli and it saves the day.
More of the coast in the region. The house we use above Kalamitsi bay is between Stoupa and Kardamyli, facing west.
