The Peloponnese for couples: where to go, and where not to

The Peloponnese suits couples better than families in most of its parts, for the plain reason that the good bits involve walking on uneven stone and eating late.
Here are four honest options and what each is actually like.
Kardamyli and Kalamitsi, on the Mani coast
A working village with a harbour, a pebble beach at Ritsa, an old fortified quarter above the modern one, and enough places to eat that a closure does not ruin the evening.
Kalamitsi is the bay immediately south, a short walk or a very short drive, and it is where the writer Patrick Leigh Fermor built his house and lived for decades. The house belongs to the Benaki Museum now and opens for scheduled visits.
This is the recommendation for most couples. Sea, walking in the Viros gorge, villages behind the coast, and a village that is not arranged around visitors.
Nafplio, in the Argolid
The handsome former capital of Greece, with a Venetian fortress above it, a proper old town and evenings that go on. If the thought of a village with four tavernas fills you with unease, this is your answer.
It is also two hours from Athens, which makes it the easy short break.
Monemvasia, on the east coast
A fortified town on a rock joined to the mainland by a causeway. It is extraordinary and it is small, and a week there is too long. One or two nights, as part of something else.
Deep Mani, south of Areopoli
Bare limestone, tower villages, Cape Tainaron at the end, and the most dramatic landscape in southern Greece.
The condition is honesty about your own habits. It is a dawn and dusk landscape. Between late morning and late afternoon in summer it is hot, shadeless and less beautiful. If you will get up for it, nothing else here compares. If you will not, base in Outer Mani and drive down for an evening.
The mistake
Trying to do three of the four in a week. The peninsula is bigger than the map suggests and the roads are slower. Two, at most, and preferably two that are next to each other.
Kardamyli plus Deep Mani works, because they are on the same coast. Nafplio plus Monemvasia works. Kardamyli plus Nafplio is a long drive across the peninsula and a week does not absorb it well.
