Why Kardamyli usually wins here
It is a village that receives visitors rather than a village built around receiving them, and on a week that difference compounds. There is a harbour with working boats, a fortified quarter above the modern village that is the best short introduction to Mani architecture on the peninsula, and a gorge running inland from the edge of town.
It is also the base for the Leigh Fermor house at Kalamitsi, the next bay south, which has short fixed visiting slots. A 45-minute drive is a poor way to start that morning.
Why Stoupa sometimes wins
Sand. On a limestone coast that is worth a great deal, and if you are travelling with children who want to be in the sea from ten in the morning it settles the argument on its own.
Stoupa is also flatter and more walkable end to end, which matters more than it sounds when you are carrying things.
The third option nobody mentions
Agios Nikolaos, 10 minutes south of Stoupa, is a working fishing harbour with tavernas along the quay. Fewer places to stay, better lunch, and the most ordinary-feeling of the three, which some people want.
What you do not have to choose
The beach. Stay in Kardamyli and drive to Stoupa for the sand on the days you want it: it is 15 minutes and there is parking. Doing it the other way round works too, but the evenings are the thing you cannot commute for.
