The view on the cover
The view on the front of Mani and the Peloponnese was photographed from a terrace above Kalamitsi bay, looking west across the Messenian gulf. It is a real house in a real village, about 10 minutes' walk from the one Patrick Leigh Fermor built.
With thanks to the family who let us stay there, and who let us take the photograph from their terrace. A good deal of the book was written on it.
Staying there
Three bedrooms, a 13-metre heated infinity pool and the whole western sky over the gulf. It is let directly by the family rather than through a platform, so dates go through us and we pass them on.
The book
Kardamyli, Kalamitsi Bay, Stoupa, Areopoli and Cape Tainaron. The peninsula has 206 mapped places to eat and 17 websites between them, so it cannot be planned from a sofa. Every place in the book was checked against whatever it does publish, and dated.
