Where to stay on Santorini, and why not on the caldera rim in Fira
TLDR
- •Avoid Fira: crowds, cruise-ship prices, and a caldera path that is a queue by mid-morning
- •Firostefani has the caldera view a walk from Fira, and is far calmer
- •Kamari and Perivolos, on the black beaches, cost a fraction of the rim
- •Exo Gonia and Akrotiri are the island's own villages
- •Three nights is plenty; many people are happier visiting from a quieter island
Do not stay in Fira. It is the island at its most crowded and most expensive. Stay in Firostefani for the caldera view a walk from town, on the black beaches at Kamari or Perivolos for a fraction of the price, or inland at Exo Gonia or down at Akrotiri for the island's own villages.
The fair case for Santorini
One of the most dramatic landscapes in Europe: a drowned volcano, a caldera that truly takes your breath away, a Bronze Age town at Akrotiri, and an unusual and very good wine made from vines grown in volcanic ash.
The case against sleeping on the rim
Cruise-ship crowds, prices set by those crowds, a caldera path that is a queue by mid-morning, and busy ferries and a small airport that make it the hardest island to leave. You pay for the view from the room, and you share it with everybody on the path outside.
Where to stay instead
Firostefani. A walk from Fira along the rim, with the same view and far calmer evenings. Reverie is here.
Kamari and Perivolos. On the black beaches of the far side, facing the open sea rather than the caldera, and a fraction of the price. Atlantis Beach Villa is at Perivolos.
Exo Gonia. Inland, a real village with its church above the vines, and almost nobody else. Nano Suites is here.
Akrotiri. At the island's far end, close to the Bronze Age site and the Red Beach. Acrothea is a short way from both.
Oia has the famous sunset and the famous crowd that comes to watch it. If you stay there, stay for the morning, when the village is yours.
What to do once you are there
Walk the caldera path from Fira to Oia, starting at 7 in summer, before the heat and the crowd. See Akrotiri early, for half a day. Take the boat to the volcano and the hot springs. Visit a winery for Assyrtiko and Vinsanto. And go down the long staircase from Oia to Ammoudi, the old harbour, where Sunset by Paraskevas has been grilling the day's catch under the red cliffs for 30 years.
How long
Three nights is plenty. Many people are happier sleeping on a quieter island, Naxos or Paros, and coming to Santorini at the end of the trip, for the geology, Akrotiri, the wine and an evening at Ammoudi.
