Where to stay in Naples, and when to stay in Sorrento instead
TLDR
- •The historic centre is for people who came to eat and walk, and do not mind noise
- •Chiaia is the smart seafront quarter, calmer at night and close to the ferries
- •The Vomero, up the funicular, is quiet and residential
- •Near the central station is convenient for a train in the morning and little else
- •If Naples is only your airport, sleep in Sorrento or go straight to the coast
Stay in the historic centre if you came to eat and walk, in Chiaia if you want the seafront and a quieter night, and on the Vomero if you want to sleep. And if Naples is only the airport on the way to the Amalfi Coast, do not stay at all: go straight to the coast, or sleep in Sorrento.
Naples is the opposite of the coast in every way. Flat, loud, crowded, poor in places, and one of the great food cities of Europe. Choose the quarter by what you want from it.
The historic centre
The old grid of narrow streets between the cathedral and the university, a World Heritage Site in its own right. This is where the pizza is, the street shrines, the washing over the lanes and the noise until late. Stay here if Naples is the point of the trip, you want to walk out of the door into it, and a scooter under the window at midnight sounds like atmosphere rather than a problem.
Chiaia and the seafront
West of the centre along the bay, smarter, greener and calmer, with the promenade, good shops and the boats out of Mergellina. Stay here for a first visit if you want Naples within a walk but a quiet street to come back to. The seafront down towards the Castel dell'Ovo is the evening walk.
The Vomero
The hill above the city, reached by funicular. Residential, orderly and quiet, with views across the bay to Vesuvius. Stay here if sleep matters more than atmosphere. You ride down into the centre and back up again, which most people come to enjoy.
Near the central station
Piazza Garibaldi and the streets round the central station are convenient for an early train to Pompeii, Herculaneum or Sorrento, and not much else. Stay here for one night before a train, not for a holiday.
When to stay in Sorrento instead
If Naples is only your way in, it is usually better not to sleep in it. Sorrento is flatter, easier and better connected than anywhere on the Amalfi side, with more frequent ferries to Capri and Naples. It is a good deal less beautiful than Positano or Amalfi, which is exactly why it is useful: a base that works, rather than a view you climb to.
What to do with a day in Naples
Eat pizza where pizza began. Go to the archaeological museum, which holds most of what was carried away from Pompeii and Herculaneum and explains both better than either site does. Then walk the old centre and let the street life do the rest.
Do not drive. Parking a hire car in Naples is no way to spend a day. Take ordinary care with bags and phones, as in any big city.
Naples works best at the start or the end of a trip, not in the middle of a week on the coast.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best area to stay in Naples for a first visit?
Chiaia, for most first visits: close enough to walk into the centre, calmer at night, and on the seafront. The historic centre is better if you want to be in the middle of the food and the noise.
Is it better to stay in Naples or Sorrento?
Sorrento, if you are really here for the Amalfi Coast and Capri. Naples, if you want the city itself: its food, its museum and its street life.
Is it safe to stay near Naples central station?
It is convenient for an early train and busy at all hours. Most people are happier staying elsewhere and taking a short ride to the station in the morning. Take ordinary city care with bags and phones anywhere in Naples.
Should I hire a car in Naples?
No. Driving and parking in the city are hard work, and the Amalfi Coast is better reached by transfer, ferry or train and seen from the water.
