Pompeii or Herculaneum: which to see, and how to do it properly

TLDR

  • •Herculaneum is the better visit for most people: smaller, better preserved, far less crowded
  • •Pompeii is vast and almost without shade; most visitors last 90 minutes and leave exhausted
  • •Whichever you choose, go at first entry, with water and a hat
  • •Pick one quarter of Pompeii and accept you are seeing a fraction of it
  • •Naples' archaeological museum explains both better than either site
Destinations:amalfi coast

Go to Herculaneum. It is far smaller than Pompeii, much better preserved because it was buried in a different way, easy to understand in a single visit, and far less crowded. If it has to be Pompeii, go at first entry, choose one quarter, and be back on the coast by early afternoon.

Why Pompeii defeats people

Pompeii is one of the most extraordinary archaeological sites on earth, and it is vast, open and almost entirely without shade. In July the heat off that stone is fierce. Most people arrive at 11:00 with everybody else, last about 90 minutes, see a fraction of the town and leave worn out, having spent the visit looking for the next patch of shade.

None of that is Pompeii's fault. It is the way people visit it.

Why Herculaneum works

Herculaneum was a smaller, richer town, and it was buried differently, under deep volcanic material rather than ash. So more of it survived: upper floors, wooden beams, doorways and the feeling of streets you could still walk down. You can see the whole site in a morning and come away understanding what you saw.

It is also much quieter. The groups go to the famous name.

How to do either properly

Go at first entry. It is cooler, quieter and the light is better.

Take water and a hat, whatever the month.

Decide before you arrive what you will see. At Pompeii, choose one quarter and give it the time, rather than walking the whole grid at a run.

Be back on the coast by early afternoon for a swim and a late lunch. A Roman site is a morning, not a day.

Getting there

Both sites sit on the railway that runs round the bay between Naples and Sorrento, so you can reach either without a car. From the Amalfi side, it is a longer journey, and a guided trip that collects you saves the connections.

Then go to the museum

The archaeological museum in Naples holds most of what was carried away from both towns: the mosaics, the frescoes, the household things. It explains Pompeii and Herculaneum better than either site does, and it is indoors, which makes it the ideal answer to a hot afternoon or a wet day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Herculaneum better than Pompeii?

For most visitors, yes. It is smaller, better preserved and far less crowded, and you can understand it in one visit. Pompeii is bigger and more famous, and much harder work in the heat.

How long do you need at Pompeii?

Most people manage about 90 minutes before the heat wins. Go at first entry, pick one quarter and give it the morning, rather than trying to see the whole town.

Can you visit Pompeii and Herculaneum in one day?

You can, but you will do both badly, and in summer the second one will be in the worst of the heat. Choose one.

Can you get to Pompeii and Herculaneum without a car?

Yes. Both are on the railway round the bay between Naples and Sorrento. From the Amalfi Coast a guided trip that collects you is simpler.
