The Capri boat day, and why it beats the ferry
TLDR
- •The usual Capri day trip is a day spent in queues: ferry, funicular, Piazzetta, Blue Grotto
- •A boat day, leaving early, is the version people remember
- •Swim beneath the Faraglioni and around the coast, and never land in the main port
- •Ask the skipper whether the Blue Grotto is worth it that day
- •Or stay two nights, once the day trippers have gone
Take a boat to Capri, not the ferry. Leave early, swim beneath the Faraglioni and around the island's coast, and never land in the main port at all. It is the version of Capri people remember, and the usual day trip is the version they complain about.
The day everybody else has
You arrive at 11:00 with an enormous crowd, queue for the funicular, walk the Piazzetta at its fullest, queue for the Blue Grotto, and leave at four, having spent most of the day in lines.
The Blue Grotto is the worst of it. You wait in a boat, change to a smaller boat, are rowed in lying flat for a few minutes, and rowed out again, after anything up to an hour on the water. And the grotto closes altogether when there is a swell, often after you have paid to get there.
The boat day
Book a boat with a skipper and leave early, before the ferries unload. Go round the island the long way, stop to swim beneath the Faraglioni and in the coves on the far side, and have lunch on board or at a place you can reach only from the water.
Ask your skipper whether the grotto is worth it that day. If it is not, they will take you somewhere lovelier with nobody else in it.
It costs less than two days at beach clubs, and you will talk about it for years.
Where to leave from
Boats go from the Amalfi Coast towns and from Sorrento, and Sorrento has the most frequent crossings. Choose the one closest to where you are staying, so the day starts on the water rather than on the road.
Or stay two nights
Capri after the last ferry has gone is a different place: quiet, expensive and truly lovely. Anacapri, up the hill, is quieter still. Two nights let you walk the island in the morning, which is what a day trip never leaves time for.
Book it twice
Nearly every group that takes one boat day wants another. Book the first early in the week, so there is room for the second.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a Capri boat tour worth it?
Yes, more than any other way of seeing the island in a day. You avoid the ferry and funicular queues, swim in places the crowds never reach, and see the coast the way it looks best.
Is the Blue Grotto worth it?
Sometimes. The visit itself is a few minutes after a wait that can run to an hour, and it closes when there is a swell. Ask your skipper on the day.
Can you visit Capri as a day trip from the Amalfi Coast?
Yes, by boat from the coast towns or from Sorrento. Go by private or small-group boat and leave early, rather than on a mid-morning ferry.
Where should I stay on Capri?
Anacapri, up the hill, is quieter. Stay two nights to see the island once the day trippers have gone.
