Finca Alaro stands in the foothills of the Serra de Tramuntana beneath the ruins of the Castell d'Alaro, one of Mallorca's three medieval rock fortresses. The property encompasses 15 acres of agricultural land - olive groves, a 2-acre vineyard of indigenous Manto Negro and Prensal Blanc grapes, and an almond orchard that turns the hillside white each February. The finca itself dates to the 18th century and was restored over a five-year period by its current owners, a Mallorcan family who wanted to demonstrate that agricultural heritage and luxury hospitality could coexist. The main house contains five bedrooms arranged around a central courtyard with a fountain and a mature bougainvillea that cascades over the upper balcony. Ground-floor rooms have original stone floors and ceiling beams of Mallorcan pine; upper-floor rooms feature handmade cement tiles in traditional geometric patterns. The master suite occupies the entire eastern wing, with views over the vineyard to the Tramuntana peaks. A separate building houses the property's working oil press and a tasting room where guests can sample olive oil and wine produced on the estate. The vineyard is managed biodynamically and produces approximately 800 bottles annually of a robust red and a crisp white that are served at the finca's table and nowhere else. The pool area, built on a terrace above the vineyard, offers uninterrupted views of the Tramuntana range and the distant plain stretching to Palma Bay. A stone barbecue kitchen beside the pool allows the chef to serve meals al fresco with the mountains as a backdrop. Alaro village, a 10-minute drive down the hill, has a weekly market, several good restaurants, and the kind of unhurried village life that has made the Mallorcan interior increasingly popular with repeat visitors who have outgrown the coast. The walk to the Castell d'Alaro begins at the finca's boundary and takes approximately 90 minutes to the summit, rewarded with 360-degree views of the entire island. Palma is 30 minutes by car.
