Originally built in 1958 by a Genevan architect as a personal retreat, Chalet Les Bossons was renovated in 2022 while preserving its mid-century character: low ceilings, horizontal window bands, and a flat roof now fitted with solar panels. The property backs directly onto the forest trail leading to the Bossons Glacier, and the living room's full-width window frames the icefall. Five minutes' drive to the Aiguille du Midi cable car. Mid-century architecture is rare in the Alps, where the default aesthetic is either traditional timber chalet or contemporary glass-and-stone. Chalet Les Bossons is a genuine anomaly: a flat-roofed, horizontal-windowed building that would look at home in a Richard Neutra catalogue. The Genevan architect who designed it in 1958 was influenced by the Case Study Houses of Los Angeles, and his intention was to create a building that framed the mountain landscape like a series of horizontal photographs. The 2022 renovation preserved this vision while upgrading the insulation, heating, and plumbing. The solar panels on the flat roof are a practical use of a feature that most alpine architects would have replaced with a pitched design. They generate enough electricity to power the chalet's heating system during shoulder months, reducing the property's carbon footprint substantially. The roof also creates a covered terrace on the south side, extending the outdoor living space into the cooler months. Four bedrooms are arranged on two levels. The design's low ceiling heights - 2.4 metres rather than the typical 2.7 - create an intimate, cocooning atmosphere that contrasts with the openness of the windows. Each bedroom has a horizontal window band at bed height, so the first thing you see on waking is the mountain. Bathrooms are small by luxury standards but beautifully detailed, with concrete tadelakt surfaces and brass fittings. The Bossons Glacier trail begins directly behind the property. A 30-minute walk through pine and larch forest leads to the viewing point, where the glacier's seracs and crevasses are visible from close range. The trail is accessible year-round, though snowshoes are recommended in winter. The proximity to this natural feature gives Chalet Les Bossons a relationship with the mountain environment that few properties can match. The living room's full-width window is the architectural statement that defines the property. A single pane of glass, 6 metres wide and 1.8 metres tall, frames the Bossons Glacier icefall against the dark granite of the Aiguille du Midi. The window has no frame on three sides - it meets the ceiling, floor, and right-hand wall without interruption - creating the impression that the room opens directly into the landscape. The Aiguille du Midi cable car station is a five-minute drive, and Chamonix town centre with its restaurants and shops is 10 minutes.
