Villa Laamu floats above the lagoon of an eco-resort in Laamu Atoll, one of the most remote and least developed atolls in the Maldivian chain. The two-bedroom overwater villa is designed for couples or a small family who want the Maldives without the resort-hopping social scene of North Male and the central atolls. The resort is the only development on a small island surrounded by a UNESCO candidate reef system. The villa is built from sustainably harvested timber, recycled materials, and local coral stone, powered by solar panels with battery storage. Environmental credentials are genuine rather than performative - the resort employs a marine biologist, runs a coral propagation programme, and has eliminated single-use plastics entirely. The villa itself is a single large pavilion divided into two bedroom suites connected by an open living area. The design is deliberately rustic-luxe: driftwood furniture, handwoven textiles by local artisans, and outdoor bathrooms open to the sky. The effect is closer to a high-end treehouse than a conventional resort suite. A private deck wraps around the villa with a plunge pool, sun loungers, and steps into the lagoon. The house reef begins twenty metres from your deck, and the snorkelling is consistently excellent. Nurse sharks rest under the villa during the day, and bioluminescent plankton illuminate the water on moonless nights. Meals are taken at the resort's restaurant or prepared in your villa by the resort chef on request. The menu emphasises sustainable seafood and ingredients grown on the island. A twice-daily boat connects to the inhabited island of Gan, where you can visit local markets, a historical Buddhist site, and the southernmost surf break in the Maldives. A domestic flight from Male to Kadhdhoo airport takes 40 minutes, followed by a 15-minute speedboat. The journey underscores the remoteness that makes Laamu special.
