Podere San Lorenzo occupies the kind of landscape that appears on every Tuscan postcard: undulating hills of golden wheat punctuated by dark cypress columns. The farmstead has been restored with travertine bathrooms, terracotta floors, and a professional kitchen where a local chef runs weekly pasta-making classes. The 18-metre pool sits on a natural terrace with 360-degree views of the Val d'Orcia UNESCO landscape. The Val d'Orcia is the Tuscany that the world imagines - and Podere San Lorenzo sits squarely in its centre. The view from the pool terrace encompasses the landscapes painted by the Sienese School in the 14th century: the same golden light, the same undulating horizon, the same isolated farmsteads and dark cypress sentinels. The UNESCO designation protects this view from development, meaning it will look the same in 50 years as it does today. The farmstead's restoration balanced preservation with comfort. The terracotta floors in the common areas are original, relaid with radiant heating beneath. The travertine bathrooms were cut from stone quarried near Rapolano Terme, 40 minutes north. Bedroom ceilings retain the original chestnut beams, darkened by centuries of wood smoke from the kitchen hearth. Six bedrooms are arranged across two levels of the main house. The master suite occupies the top floor with a private terrace facing south toward Monte Amiata. Two ground-floor rooms open directly onto the garden, which is useful for families with young children. All rooms have blackout shutters - the traditional wooden kind, not electronic blinds. The pasta-making classes have become one of Podere San Lorenzo's most talked-about features. The local chef, who grew up in Pienza and trained in Siena, teaches guests to make pici (the thick, hand-rolled Tuscan pasta), ravioli, and tagliatelle. Classes take place in the professional kitchen on Wednesday afternoons, followed by a dinner featuring the results. The chef is also available for daily meal preparation at additional cost. The surrounding area offers some of Tuscany's finest food and wine experiences. Pienza, the "ideal Renaissance city" and a Pecorino cheese capital, is 20 minutes' drive. Montalcino and its Brunello wine cellars are 30 minutes west. Montepulciano, with its Vino Nobile and dramatic hilltop piazza, is 25 minutes south. A Saturday morning trip to the Pienza market is almost mandatory - local cheeses, honey, truffles in season, and bread baked in wood-fired ovens.
